The Story of The Doctor Beard Balm

W.G. Grace (The Doctor) is widely thought of as grandfather to the modern game of cricket, yet he is almost as famous for his grand imperial. More Karl Marx than Honest Abe, his was simply ‘the W.G’ of beards. Like all good cricketers W.G was fond of a little spit and polish, a heady mix of linseed oil, liquorice and tobacco juice spittle, used to shine the ball. ‘The Doctor’ our beard balm is a nod to this heritage, the great game of cricket and its bearded hero W.G. Grace, we just hope it smells a little better.

When we bandied around the first iterations of a beard balm or beard wax, we started by throwing up names of men with famous beards who we imagined might be in need of such a product. Men we admired and respected, men of honour and intrigue, but men that perhaps might do with a groom. And so it was that one of the names we landed on was close to our hearts, being a legend in his field, but also a well rounded gentleman who lived a  full and eventful life. W.G. Grace (The Doctor) is widely thought of as grandfather to the modern game of cricket, yet he is almost as famous for his grand imperial. More Karl Marx than Honest Abe, his, was simply ‘the W.G’ of beards. Like all good cricketers W.G was fond of a little spit and polish, a heady mix of linseed oil, liquorice and tobacco juice spittle, often used to shine (or doctor - ahem) the cricket ball. 'The Doctor' our beard balm, is a nod to this heritage, the great game of cricket and its bearded hero W.G.Grace, we just hope it smells a little better.

WHY WE MADE IT

Frankly we made it because we could not find one that suited our idea of what a beard balm should do. That is, we wanted a balm that shaped and styled the beard, adding weight and taming, but without adding oil or leaving a waxy residue. We wanted fragrance but without it coming off your hands and then everything you touch. So we built a balm that; smells great but not overpowering, shapes and helps define the beard, and finally feels great on and in the beard, like it should be there, like you want it there. We think we have the balance just right and the ‘doctor’ would have been proud to use it.
